The lock ring has a spring-loaded grey tab, which drops into a notch on the filter housing when the ring has been sufficiently tightened. The main purpose of this tab is to discourage overtightening, and you have to lift it before you can unscrew the ring. A version of this lock ring without the tab is also available.
